What I do
After I've reviewed your manuscript or a sample of your work, and any other relevant documents that you've submitted to me, we can discuss what kind of personalized editing service your work needs.
I edit non-fiction, academic, educational, non-profit, business, corporate, and government material, and I'll happily welcome other genres of written work if the opportunity arises. I also edit selective types of AI-generated scripts and will apply reliable judgement and responsibility to check for conscious language use and unintentional bias, and I'll review that the text does not sound like it's AI-generated.
When assessing your material, I'll consider its length (word count), complexity (other factors beyond text such as documentation of sources, tables, and illustrations), and the level of editing required (how "polished" it is) before providing you with a price quote and an estimated timeline to complete the edit.
I'm also fluent in French and Spanish and will copy edit or proofread your English translations from these languages to make sure that they accurately represent the original document.
Copy editing
I’ll correct grammar errors, punctuation, and spelling and check that sentence structure, word usage, as well as the general information (facts, calculations, URLs, etc.) in the material’s content are accurate.
Because copy editing also deals with overall consistency and completeness, I’ll flag or query any elements that are missing, unclear, or problematic, and offer suggestions.
Stylistic (line) editing
This stage in the editing process refines language choices for consistent tone, flow, and effect to improve clarity while maintaining the writer’s voice and intended meaning. It’s often done (if requested) during copy editing as a combined copy/stylistic edit, also known as line editing.
For a stylistic edit of your material, I’ll ensure that sentence and paragraph construction are clear and effective for readability and coherence.
Proofreading
By closely examining the final layout copy, I'll scrutinize the textual and visual elements to check their accuracy before the material is sent to print.
I'll identify and correct any typographical and formatting errors, ensure adherence to the established editorial style sheet, and catch any inconsistencies that would affect the final print.
Structural editing
Also called substantive editing, this edit looks at the "bigger picture" and deals with how the material's content is presented. It's done at the initial stages of the editing process to shape the organization and content so that the manuscript is as effective as possible.
To do this I'll determine the manuscript's overall coherence and logical progression (flow) in relation to its intended audience, medium, and purpose. I'll also identify what needs to be deleted or added and ensure that all the various elements included in the material are effectively balanced.
Rates
Rates vary depending on the editing service and type of text that you want edited, the material's length, and the level of editing required.
For larger projects a free sample edit is available of a 500- to 1000-word excerpt of your manuscript to allow for both of us to decide if I'm the right editor for you and your work.
Estimated quotes are generally project-based, established through evaluating the amount of time (in hours) the editing project is expected to take. This depends on word count, how complex or difficult the material is, how technical it may be, how "polished" it is, and the levels of judgement and rewriting involved. For example, for a text that is written by someone who does not have English L1 proficiency or a script that requires quite a lot of reflective judgment, rates will likely be higher. If any additional elements and/or requests are integrated into the project after I've made the original assessment and established a quote, the quote will be adjusted (upon discussion and mutual agreement).
